THE ADVENTURE

cir·cum·nav·i·ga·tion, noun: the action or process of sailing all the way around something, especially the world.

We are planning to leave our home in San Francisco to start a circumnavigation in June 2023. This has been in the works for many years and after lots of planning we are finally ready!  Whenever we share our plan we get lots of questions, here are the most frequent ones:
WHERE DO YOU START?
We are starting in June 2023 in Ellos on the West Coast of Sweden where we are boarding our cruising boat Saltair.
WHERE WILL YOU GO?
We have a plan but we recognize that plans do change.  Here is our current thinking:  Sweden - UK - Brittany - Canary Islands - Caribbean - Panana Canal - Galapagos - Marqueses - French Polynesia - Fiji / Tonga - Australia / New Zealand - Reunion - South Africa (Cape Town) - Brazil -  Caribbean.
We have chosen to join rallies organized by the World Cruising Club to provide us with a community and to assist with logistics.  In November 2023 we will join the ARC for the transatlantic crossing from the Canary Islands to St. Lucia (Caribbean).
We will spend the 2024 winter/spring season visiting all the islands of the Caribbean and hopefully come to the East Coast of the US for the Summer/Fall.
Late fall if all goes well, we would sail back to St Lucia to join the World ARC 2025 for the circumnavigation.  The World ARC hosts around 30 boats for a 15 month around-the-world adventure covering 26,000 nautical miles. Following the classic tradewinds route, the rally avoids regions of political instability, piracy and the storm seasons in both hemispheres.
* Note that plans are forever variable when you live on a boat! Checkout the blog section of the site for our actual plans!

WHAT IS THE LONGEST PART?
The segment from the Galapagos to Hiva Oa, Marquesas is 2980 NM (Nautical Miles) and will take approximately 3 weeks! The Atlantic crossing is almost as long at 2800 NM.
HOW BIG IS YOUR BOAT?
We have a 57ft bluewater cruiser designed for extended voyages in open water. Safe and comfortable!
DO YOU HAVE AN ENGINE?
YES, although we hope to use our sails most of the time.
IS IT JUST THE 3 OF YOU?
We are heading out as a family and will sometimes sail on our own, but we also expect to welcome friends and family and will have experienced sailors (friends) as crew for many segments!
WILL SETH HAVE OTHER KIDS AROUND?
ABSOLUTELY!  The ARC (across the Atlantic) hosts upwards of 200 boats crossing from Europe to the Caribbean in November and there are typically dozens of family boats with kids taking part. The rally organizes kids activities before departure, on the radio while underway and upon arrival, and the boat kids rapidly bond and form their own community.  The World ARC, while much smaller, also has family boats.
WHAT ABOUT SETH'S SCHOOLING?
We will be boat-schooling Seth using a combination of tools following a combined French and American curriculum.
